HEALTH: Confirmed case of MERS discovered in United States

INDIANA  --  The World Health Organization has confirmed a case of MERS in the United States.

And we now know more about the American man who was diagnosed with the  deadly virus typically found in the Middle East.

Last week, a patient at Community Hospital in Indiana was diagnosed with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome  Coronavirus -  or MERS.

The man had recently traveled to Saudi Arabia to provide health care.
Doctors updated his condition today, saying the man is doing well, and should be able to go home soon.

In the meantime, he is being quarantined to prevent the spread of the virus.

Health officials say they are not surprised MERS ended up in the US.

We're not surprised that MERS has come to the United States. We know that infectious diseases do not respect international boundaries. In this day and age of global travel and trade, infectious diseases can spread almost anywhere.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, MERS comes from the same group of viruses as the common cold and attacks the respiratory system.

Symptoms may include fever, cough and shortness of breath, and can lead to pneumonia and kidney failure.  More health information click here
