Two Okaloosa County restaurants shut down after health inspections
Two more Okaloosa County restaurants were temporarily shut down after random health inspections.
The Cabana Cafe, in the Hurricane Lanes Bowling Alley in Destin, had an emergency closure May 14.
The Golden Buffet in Crestview was told to close its doors on May 16.
A diner there captured one violation on video.
Laura Hussey "The Golden Buffet is open now and the manager didn't want to talk about the emergency closure. But that closure and others certainly have diners talking."
A customer at Golden Buffet shot this video back in March.
The unexpected dining companion was not the reason for this month's inspection, but the restaurant was cited for rodent activity among other violations.
Jacoya/Crestview "I heard that there were roaches in the kitchen, I think the number was like thirty-six. Also they weren't storing food a the proper temperature, they were putting chicken with the shrimp."
Evidence of roaches and improper food storage were found at most of the sixteen restaurants in Okaloosa and Walton Counties that have had emergency closures this year.
That's up from just two establishments last year.
Glen/Crestview "I'm glad that someone, the Health Department is doing their job."
The Department of Business and Professional Regulation does two unannounced inspections per year at every restaurant.
They say the spike in closures is not related to any procedure or personnel change.
Diners we spoke to say they wouldn't mind even more inspections.
Jacoya "It's really bad 'cause you know we eat to live and I feel like it's really not good for us to go into a restaurant and for the food not to be up to certain conditions, up to standards."
Laura Hussey "All inspection reports are posted on a state website. One regulator says they want consumers to know about the places they're eating. We will get that newslink up for you on our website, weartv.com."
The owner of the Golden Buffet says for the last seven years, they have always passed their inspections.
She says their violations were corrected in a matter of hours.
