Correctional Officer injured in jail explosion

ESCAMBIA COUNTY   --  ESCAMBIA COUNTY - More than a hundred people were injured during the explosion; this includes both jail staff and inmates.  Carmen Stone couldn't believe the news once she learned about the Escambia County Jail explosion.  Even more frightening, her uncle and aunt were both inside the jail during the explosion.

"It's just been a tragic accident for not only me but for my family as well" said Carmen Stone, uncle injured in jail explosion.

Christopher Hankinson works as a correctional officer.  His wife, Shannon works as a detention officer.  She was on the floor above Christopher during the explosion.  Luckily, she came out unscathed, Christopher on the other hand was not as fortunate.

"The concrete floors from the other floors were caving in, and he fell into the basement" said Stone.

The explosion left Christopher with many injuries.
"My uncle had shattered his vertebrae, C-12 to C-14 vertebrae, and he was paralyzed and it's possible he will not walk ever again" said Stone.

Christopher was taken by life flight to UAB hospital in Birmingham in critical condition.  With his three kids and wife by his side, Friday morning, Christopher was upgrade to stable condition.  Finally a bit of good news for the family.

"Just pray for everything, pray for a miracle...a miracle will happen" said Stone.

Once the family is back in town, they face another challenge, retrofitting their home to make it wheelchair accessible.
