Saufley Field Road Landfill receives national award

Escambia County received a national award for its work on the Saufley Field Road Construction and Demolition Debris Landfill.

Escambia County spent more than $6,000,000 to fix the environmental problems on the property.
The  landfill had raised serious health concerns because of hydrogen sulfide gas, and a series of fires.
The Solid Waste Association of North America, or SWANA, awarded the project its Silver Award for Landfill Remediating.
SWANA recognized Escambia County's effort because it utilized a system called "closure turf" that had never been permitted or constructed in the state of Florida.
The material was chosen for its ability to protect the surrounding environment from materials within the landfill and for its natural resemblance to grass.
