Florida teen drives around for hours with grandma's body in van

Police are accusing a Florida teenager of killing his grandmother inside her home at a nudist community and driving around with the body for nearly five hours.

Pasco County sheriff's spokeswoman Melanie Snow said Tuesday that 18-year-old Brandon Machetto had been living with his grandmother for several weeks and they fought frequently.

Police say a neighbor called authorities early Monday after seeing the teen drag what appeared to be a body -- wrapped in something but with feet sticking out -- into Schmitt's minivan. A Silver Alert was issued and deputies at one point tried to pull over Machetto, but he kept driving.

Authorities say he ended up back at the Paradise Lakes community where his grandmother, 74-year-old Sylvia Schmitt, lived for 30 years. He was taken into custody there.

Schmitt's neighbors were shaken by the development.

A martial arts instructor who taught Marchetto told the Tampa Bay Times that the teen had been hit in the back of the head with a rock when he was 14 or 15, and had apparently suffered brain damage. The instructor said he was stuck at an emotional maturity of a 13-year-old.

Machetto is being held without bail on a first-degree murder charge. It's unclear if he has an attorney.

Friends say Machetto suffered a brain injury several years ago.
