Beef prices on the rise

A thin herd of cattle is leading to increased beef prices.

US beef prices are up 74 percent since 2009 to the highest on record.
Meat costs are rising faster than any other food group.

Supplies will probably remain tight following a seven year decline in the herd that has left the fewest cattle in at least six decades.

It can take three years to expand the herd and a prolonged drought in Texas has parched the pastures needed to raise young cattle.
