TRACKING THE TROPICS

On the map below, the circle over the Gulf of Mexico is for an area of low pressure heading toward Texas.  Development is not expected.  Also, we're tracking Cristobal and a tropical wave over the Atlantic Ocean that may become another depression though chances are low.

Red snapper season in federal waters, ends

Red snapper may be over in Federal waters but local fishing Captains say there are still plenty of fish in the sea.

So many of the charter boat businesses here on Pensacola Beach, have built their business on catching Red Snapper. "I don't like any of this stuff because this is broken government not broken fishing" says Chris Phillips, a Captain at Pensacola Beach Marina.

Those in the fishing industry say the short Red Snapper season this year is forcing them to market catching other types of fish.
"The other type of snapper, we are able to keep a lot more of them" says Clay White, the booking agent for Pensacola Beach Marina. Which ultimately means more meat to bring home.

But if you do have your heart set on catching Red Snapper, you still can, It just has to happen in State waters and before July 15th.

"People shouldn't be scared to book a trip that's not red snapper, cause you will have fun and take home a lot of fish" says Phillips. If you are planning a fishing charter it is best to make a reservation as soon as possible.
