Some city council members push to recall Mayor Hayward

The rift between Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward and the City Council is widening.
Some council members are now trying to get a measure on the ballot to give voters the power to recall a Mayor.

The latest clash is the Mayor's appointment of Rusty Wells as the new council executive.
Wells was previously the city attorney, from 2008 to 2011.

Last week, Hayward fired Lila Cox as council executive, without giving a reason and he rehired Wells.

The city attorney says the Mayor had the right to fire Cox, but some council members aren't happy with the move.
They called a special meeting this morning

They made a recommendation to the Mayors office to place Wells as a temporary legal counsel to the city council.
And they voted to re-hire Cox as council executive.

Some members acknowledge that the Mayor does not have to respond to their recommendation.
The council is also trying to get a measure on the ballot to allow the hiring of a city council staff, to help research issues that come before them.
