How much protein is too much?

High protein diets are all the rage right now..
And you can find a slew of protein packed products from cereals and pancakes to pretzels even protein pasta. 
   
Diets like Atkins and the idea that protein is good for losing weight have given the food trend a big marketing boost.
   
But is all that extra protein good for you?
Protein helps build muscle mass.
But there is a downside to excessive protein intake

Lisa Drayer / Nutritionist      Too much protein, especially animal protein, could lead to kidney stones. Too much protein at the expense of carbohydrates, can also lead to ketosis and ketosis // It actually alerts the body that it's in starvation mode.

The current recommendation for protein is about 46 grams per day for women and 56 grams per day for men.
