PA Vet Gets 4th of July Surprise
PENNSYLVANIA-- Doug and Alexis Vitale received a new home. And it's not just any home it's a smart home.
Doug Viatle is a Marine Veteran, a double amputee suffering from advance brain trauma. Their new house has more than 3,000 sq. ft. of handicapped accessible space, with cutting edge technology at the couple's fingertips.
"Everything we have to do will be so much easier here," Alexis said. "Just getting around will be easier; showering will be easier; getting ready in the mornings and at night will be easier."
Single-level living means Doug can go anywhere -- freely. It's a concept that deeply touches his wife.
"This house is independence for us," she said. "Independence is something Doug's lost, and he's regaining it on one of the best holidays in our country."
Special pulleys will help move Doug from his bedroom to the bathroom
a concept that leaves Alexis almost speechless.
"When everyone leaves, the crowds go and the cameras go, and we get to be here and really let it sink in that this is our home," she said, "I think it's going to be a great feeling for both of us."
