Student suspension results in automatic zeros for classwork and tests
Right now, if a student is suspended, he or she automatically gets zeroes for all classwork and tests.
Going forward, parents and students can work with the teacher to make up that missed work.
The student is still punished by being separated from friends.
But superintendent Malcolm Thomas says the old policy, was like a double punishment.
"If you think about that, if a student received the maximum which is 10 days suspension, that's zeros not in one class, but every class all day long. Even good students would struggle to recover from that so, we're gonna put this back where the decision ought to be made, and that's in the hands of the parents and the students," said Thomas.
Students will have to make up the work in a reasonable amount of time and that will be determined by the teacher.
