Alabama police officer drowns at Orange Beach

An Alabama police officer dies after he was swept away by a rip current at Orange Beach yesterday.
Montgomery police Lieutenant Rian Rider was pronounced dead at a hospital in Pensacola.

Orange Beach Fire and Rescue were called to Cotton Bayou Beach access.
Rider was swimming with his niece when they were swept away by a rip current.
Rider was able to rescue his niece from the rip current, but was unable to free himself.

He was underwater for two minutes when he was pulled out by Orange Beach lifeguards.
Rider worked on the force since 2002

He was commander of the Special Victims and Domestic Violence units.
