Business robbed in Downtown Destin

An ordinary Saturday sees Main Street here in Destin pretty quiet with the exception of a few locals out running errands. But a parking lot of police cars made this Saturday anything but ordinary for Flutterby Antiques.

Owner Ron Sandstead says "We've been in business for 13 years and we've never had a problem. We've never even had a bad check."

Just after noon on Saturday, a man walked into Flutterby, and according to owner Michele Sandstead,  "..talked on the cellphone for a while, and then as soon as he was finished with that, he just went up to her at the counter, wielded a knife, and told her to lay all the cash on the counter."

The employee on duty, a 70 year old woman, gave him the $141 dollars that was in the register. She was not hurt.

Ron Sandstead said "She's one of the world's sweetest ladies and for this to happen to her is pretty upsetting for both of us."

The Sandsteads say they're feeling a range of emotuions.

Ron said "I'm pretty angry about the whole thing, myself."

Said Michele, "I don't know that I'll ever stop thinking about it. Once it's happened to you, the violation of it.. you feel violated. It's just things, it's not life."

The Sandsteads say they'll be installing security features in and around the store soon. Customer support has rolled in since Saturday, and that's helped them move on.

Said Michelle, "We've had a lot of support. A lot of family support, a lot of customers, several customers have called today. And church support yesterday."

While the owners of Flutterby described the robbery as "heartbreaking," they say their only goal now is to get back to business as usual as soon as possible.
