Council expected to add text messages to city's Code of Ethics
Next week, the Pensacola City Council is expected to discuss adding text messaging to the city's code of ethics.
The proposed amendment would apply to work phones and personal phones used for city business.
City Council Woman Sherri Myers says it's important to make sure messages can't legally be destroyed or erased since more people are using their smartphones for city business.
State statutes do not specifically mention 'text messaging" in the public records laws.
But the Attorney General's office has ruled the same rules that apply to e-mail should be considered for text messaging depending on the content of the texts.
The council will discuss the proposal at its agenda conference on Monday
