Obama signs bill to overhaul veterans' health care
FORT BELVOIR, Va. (CNN) - A $16 billion bill aimed at overhauling the troubled Veterans Affairs Department was signed by President Obama Thursday.
The measure provides:
Money for more VA hospitals, doctors, and nurses
More funds so some veterans can get health care at private facilities
And it makes it easier to fire or discipline senior va officials
It's aimed at erasing the backlog of veterans across the country waiting for care.
Investigators found that dozens of veterans died while waiting for care,
They also uncovered secret lists kept by some va facilities to hide the waiting periods.
"As a country, we have a sacred obligation to serve you as well as you've served us; an obligation that doesn't end with your tour of duty," said President Obama.
It is unclear how long the funding will actually last and when the VA will need to go back to congress for additional money.
