H1N1

Now H1N1 vaccination clinics are underway in Kanawha County schools. Tuesday morning, nearly 300 students at Elk Elementary Center brought in permission slips to get the spray or the shot. It's the first of four vaccine clinics scheduled this week in the school system.
Earlier this month, dozens of kids were absent from the Elk Elementary Center. About twenty of those students had confirmed cases of swine flu, but there were several other reasons for the absences. "We've had cases of bronchitis and mono, and there have been a lot of sicknesses. A lot of it has just been fear from the other families to send their kids, and fear of the unknown, with the swine flu," said principal Cathi Bradley.
In a school with nearly 700 students, even a handful of cases can hit hard and fast. That's why principal Bradley says she's glad they were the site of the first vaccination clinic. "Being that we're such a large school, I think it was a great idea to start with us first. Anything that comes in through this building is going to spread quicker," she said.
The school system has been flooded with concerns from parents about the swine flu, and health officials say the vaccine clinics can ease some of those fears.
Lead nurse for Kanawha County Schools Brenda Isaac said, "A lot of parents are very anxious for their kids to get vaccinated, especially if the kids have some other health problems."
If you have a student with health problems, and you don't want to wait for a clinic at your school, the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department will offer vaccines each Thursday. The clinic is for pregnant women, and high risk children from 6 months old to 18 years old. You can go to the health department on Lee Street from 12:30- 3:30 p.m. for the H1N1 clinics on Thursday.
