Stormwatch: Brace for an above average hurricane season
Hurricane season starts June 1st and runs through November 30th, the months when conditions are most favorable for development.
We've already had our first named storm this year. Tropical Storm Arlene formed in the North Atlantic on April 19th and fizzled out a couple of days later.
The full list of names for this year can be found on the National Hurricane Center website. Names are re-used every six years, unless a storm causes significant damage or deaths. In that case, the name would be retired and replaced.
This year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting an above average season with 11 to 17 named storms. Five to nine are expected to become hurricanes with two to four of those strengthening to major hurricanes, category three or stronger.
