2 injured after accidental gun discharge in Atmore High School gym

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Ala. -- Two people are in the hospital after a gun was discharged during a basketball game inside the Atmore High School gym on Thursday.

The Escambia County, Alabama Sheriff's Office says a preliminary investigation lead to the determination that a small group of individuals enter the gym area and that one of the young men was concealing a handgun in his waistband. The firearm fell from the suspects pants and hit the ground causing the gun to discharge.

The sheriff's office says two people in the group later showed up at local hospitals for treatment for appeared to be wounds from bullet fragments.

The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made.

The sheriff's office says they believe this was an isolated incident and there doesn’t appear to be any intent to shoot or harm anyone that we have discovered.
