300+ drivers receive red light citations at Crestview intersection
CRESTVIEW, Fla. (WEAR) —
It’s been a month since Crestview police have had the helping hand of technology to tackle the problem of people running red lights.
The Crestview Police Department said the results are startling.
WEAR told you in 2018 about the camera now in place at U.S. 90 and State Road 85, and at Redstone Boulevard and State Road 85.
January was the first time police started issuing citations.
A whopping 323 drivers got the bad news in the mail that they had been caught in December.
Officers gave WEAR a look at some of the video and the review process each violation goes through before a citation is issued.
Police say some of the video is unsettling.
"It's a significant problem. Some of the video It's almost harrowing how close we are to accidents there,” said Public Information Officer Brian Hughes.
The intersections were chosen because they were busy, but also because they do not allow officers safe access to observe then follow and pull over a violator.
They hope as word of mouth about the tickets spread that violations will go down.
