A man is dead following an hours-long standoff just south of Fairhope Monday evening.

The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office said two deputies were shot at Monday afternoon at a trailer park located off Highway 98 near Keller Road in the Barnwell community.

Neither of the deputies were hit by bullets, but the suspect retreated into his trailer, which led to a standoff.

A SWAT team arrived on scene to negotiate with the man. They deployed several tear gas canisters for about two and half hours to try and get him to come out.

After that, Baldwin County Sheriff Hoss Mack told Channel 3 News the SWAT team made entry into the trailer.

Sheriff Mack said the man shot at deputies who were wearing ballistic vests and a shield. The deputies were hit, but the vest and shield protected them.

Sheriff Mack said this led to the deputies to fire back at the suspect and killing him.

No deputies were injured from Monday's standoff.

"As it stands right now, I think our guys and ladies performed well today," Sheriff Mack said. "We are remorseful it had to end in this situation, but that is a situation we were called into."

Several agencies will start investigating the deputy-involved shooting, including Baldwin County Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs, the Major Crimes Unit Investigation, and the Baldwin County Attorney's Office.

Sheriff Mack said he will likely release the identity of the suspect at a press conference on Tuesday, assuming next of kin has been notified.
