'Cats' out of the bag: Broadway hit helping local felines

Cats for a cause: Broadway musical partners with humane society

The cat's out of the bag: The hit Broadway musical, Cats, is coming to Pensacola! However, there's more to this community theatre show than the catchy tunes, costumes and choreography.

The curtain opens this Friday night, July 21, at 7:30 p.m. and the show runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the next three weekends.

Although this is community theatre, Pensacola Little Theatre artistic director, Kathy Holsworth says the production level is going to be "cat-tastic."

"Cats the musical for us, is a celebration of volunteer art," Kathy said. "It is going to be beautiful to watch and fun to experience, and one of the best dancing musicals you've ever seen in Pensacola."

It may be at the Pensacola Little Theatre, but this is no little production. The budget for Cats is $46,000, $15,000 of which was spent just buying the rights to perform the famous Broadway show.

With a big budget, obviously the folks at the Pensacola Little Theatre hope every show is a sell-out, but executive director Sid Williams says it's not all about the money.

The curtain for 'Cats' opens Friday, July 21.

"We need the help of the community, so we also have to be responsible for helping the community when they need some help as well," Sid said.

That's why the Pensacola Little Theatre is partnering with the Pensacola Humane Society. This Saturday, from 4-7 p.m., representatives from the humane society will be at the theatre with dozens of adoptable cats, hoping musical goers will be inspired to take home a new family member, after watching the show.

"I think that the Pensacola Humane Society is a great cause," Sid said. "It's something that we're excited to partner with, with the tie-in with cats and animals, we're happy to do whatever we can for them."

If you can't add to your family right now, there is another way to help. Just drop off a donation for the Pensacola Humane Society, to the Pensacola Little Theatre, during theatre office hours, which are noon-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Whether it's food, bedding, money or something else, you'll get a 10 percent discount on your 'Cats' tickets.

Tickets range in price from $9 to $33. You can buy them online at www.pensacolalittletheatre.com or pick them up right here at the box office from Monday to Friday, noon to 5 pm.
