A family pet suddenly turned aggressive and attacked a 19-year-old man in Escambia County.

A responding deputy arrived at the home on North Pine Barren Road near McDavid to find family members lying on top of the dog to control him. The deputy shot the dog in the head.

According to a report, family members told animal control officers their dog, Rosco, became highly aggressive Tuesday afternoon.

The report states a younger child was eating popcorn when Rosco started to charge.

The 19-year-old brother grabbed Rosco's collar, and the dog bit him in the arm, the report states.

According to the Animal Control report, the dog's owner told deputies the two-and-a-half-year-old dog had been vaccinated for rabies at Atmore Animal Hospital. The gunshot made rabies testing impossible.

The report states the family took the 19-year-old to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.

The report did not provide details on Rosco's breed or size.
