ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Over 100 people attended a vigil Monday night for Tadaris Johnson -- the 25-year-old man shot and killed Saturday evening in Escambia County.

They gathered outside his grandfather's home on Paula Ave. to remember the young man.

Loved ones remembered TJ -- as he was known -- as a hard worker and a good grandson. While he did have his own troubles with the law, they're heartbroken he was gunned down in front of his grandfather's home.

His grandfather Joe Johnson was inside his house when TJ was shot and killed outside during a neighbor's birthday party.

"The street was full of people," Joe Johnson said. "Everybody was eating, then I heard, 'pop, pop.' I thought it was fireworks. I ran out the door -- my daughter said my son had been shot."

Johnson said TJ was in a car with a friend when both were shot. His friend survived.

"When I left him, they were sitting in the car talking," he said. "When I got back, both of them was on the ground."

Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons told WEAR News on Monday that at least 12 shots were fired. So far, investigators do not have a motive or suspect in the shooting.

Johnson's family said TJ has a baby girl on the way.

"First time being a dad. He was proud of that," he said. "He was just full of life. This tragedy happened all at once. We don't know a thing about what went down."

As the search for suspects continue, so will prayers for the killer to be caught.

"We're going to let the lord handle it," Johnson said. "Whatever the lord sees fit, so be it."

WEAR News spoke to local activistEllison Bennett earlier Monday. He's urging the community to come forward with info about the shooting to the sheriff's office.
