The suspect who Pensacola Police say attacked an officer before he was shot has been identified as a 24-year-old Milton man.

Cameron Alumbaugh's family reached out to Channel 3 News after they were not allowed to see him in the hospital.

Alumbaugh's family told Channel 3's Anthony Pura he has a history of mental health issues.

An initial investigation by Channel 3 News revealed Alumbaugh has a been arrested several times in both Santa Rosa and Escambia County. He was recently released from the Escambia County Jail around 1 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016, just one day before the officer-involved shooting.

Saturday, Pensacola Police say Alumbaugh led Santa Rosa County Sheriff's deputies on a chase, then shortly after, refused to stop for Pensacola Police officers until he pulled over on Fairfield Drive and Ruby Avenue.

Police say he got out of his truck, swung a large pipe at officers and struck one.

Another officer, who was later placed on paid administrative leave, shot the suspect.

Both the injured officer and Alumbaugh were taken to area hospitals. The officer has since been treated and released.

Alumbaugh remains in a local hospital in critical condition, according to hospital officials.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating.

Tonight at 5 p.m., Alumbaugh's loved ones talk to Anthony about the role his mental health issues played in this case.
