Family of murdered Navarre woman speaks out after son-in-law's arrest

Family of murdered Navarre woman speaks out after son-in-law's arrest

We are hearing from a family mourning a mother who was murdered at her Navarre home.

Robert Lucas, 51, is accused of killing his mother in law, Carrie Brewer.

Kenneth Brewer says the death of his mother left him and his family heartbroken and desperate for justice

"We're all in shock. We wouldn’t’ve expected this in a million years," Brewer explained.

Carrie is a woman he describes as having a heart of gold.

"She especially loved to help the hard cases and adopted them into the family," added Brewer.

Now, that voice that they all loved hearing over the phone is gone.

"It is what it is. You can't do anything to change it at this point, it is what it is, make it better from here," Brewer said.

Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s deputies believe Lucas was the one who killed her.

According to a report, Lucas allegedly struck Brewer in the head multiple times with a blunt object, then hid her remains in the family garage.

Reports also reveal Lucas allegedly told a family member he beat his mother-in-law to death because "she would not leave him alone”.

Lucas then plotted to kill several other family members, according to a report.

Dashcam video show Lucas leading deputies on a high-speed chase before he was taken into custody in Gulf Breeze Wednesday.

"We do not know anything. The police aren't going to release anything until the trial," said Brewer.

Family members say Brewer was a devout Catholic.

Now, they just want to be able to give her the respectful burial she deserves.

"She was an amazing woman. She has lots of family and friends and we just wanted to make sure she is loved," said Brewer’s daughter-in-law, Leanne Coffey.

Lucas is facing several charges, including premeditated murder, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, vehicle theft, and eluding police.

He is being held at the Santa Rosa County Jail without bond.

The family has started a GoFundMe page to help cover burial costs. Click here for more information.
