The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) said first graders at a local elementary school found a loaded 40-caliber handgun on Friday.

Plew Elementary students in Niceville found the gun on school grounds.

The sheriff's office said an elementary teacher was walking her students back to class around 11:30 a.m. when she noticed students looking at something in the leaves between the library and a classroom building. It turned out to be the handgun.

Deputies believe the gun is connected to an incident being investigated by the Niceville Police Department that happened in the area Thursday night. Authorities said the two suspects ran from officers after jumping the school fence.

The OCSO School Resource Officer responded and turned the weapon over to Niceville police.

Charges could be levied by the sheriff's office if the person who left the gun on schools grounds can be identified.
