Okaloosa County is declaring a war on lionfish.

The county kicked off a three-month tournament targeting the invasive fish this week.

"Nothing really recognizes them as something they need to fear, or something they want to eat. And the problem is, lionfish are competing with a lot of the native species we have and are actually preying on them," explained Marine Resource Coordinator Alex Fogg.

Organizers hope competitors will remove more than 10,000 lionfish from the Gulf.

The tournament will wrap up with a lionfish festival on May 18 and May 19 at HarborWalk Village.
