ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- An 18-year-old woman and her friend were less then five minutes from getting off work when Friday's deadly shooting took place inside an Escambia County Home Depot.
WEAR News reported earlier Monday that18-year-old Brooklyn Sims was the contract employee shot and killed inside the store on Davis Highway. Keith Agee, 20, is now charged for her murder.
Sims' close friend and co-worker, Xia Xang Parnell, was one of the other two shooting victims.
"Right now, mentally, I can't take it," said Parnell, who was grazed by a bullet and treated at the hospital. "I see a Home Depot and it sends me to a panic attack."
An arrest report states Agee entered the store, turned down aisle 52 -- where Sims, Parnell and another female employee were working -- and opened fire on Sims.
Parnell says she was just steps away from Sims at the time of the shooting with her back toward Agee. Sims was shot several times and died on scene, while Parnell and the other employee were both grazed by bullets as they ran away.
"We were almost done [with work] -- probably another two minutes and we would've been leaving," Parnell said. "It's a scene you never think you'll be apart of. I've seen it on TV and movies, but I never thought it would be me in a situation like that or happen to somebody I love."
Parnell says Sims and Agee shared a two-year-old daughter, but their relationship was always unstable.
"It was a rough situation between them trying to be together," she said. "Recently she's just been trying to co-parent with him. That's all she kind of wanted to do. ...All she ever talked about was that baby. Kacey is and was her life."
The arrest report states Agee got a call Friday from a local medical center while he was at work in northern Mobile county in Alabama. He then drove to Pensacola.
WEAR News called Agee's employer,AM/NS Calvert, on Monday, which hasn't returned a request for comment.
Court records show Agee was charged twice in the last two years in Mobile with domestic violence. In both cases, the charges were dropped when that alleged victim refused to testify.
Parnell knows the road ahead for her and other victims will be hard. She's encouraging anyone who feels threatened to seek help.
"Any woman going through a domestic violence situation, get help. Don't be scared," she said. "I don't want this to continue to happen. It's not fair to people's families -- to kids -- that men are taking it this far to kill somebody."
Parnell says she's seeking therapy now and working with Sims' family to try and heal together. A balloon release is set for Monday eveningin Citronelle, Alabama to honor Sims' life.
A GoFundMe has also been started for Sims' family.
Agee remains in Escambia County Jail on no bond.
