Group plans to bring ice skating facility to Gulf Breeze
GULF BREEZE, Fla. (WEAR) —
The Santa Rosa County Zoning Board heard a proposal last week to bring an ice skating facility to the Gulf Breeze area.
“Our goal is to provide the community with a state of the art recreational ice skating facility with a safe, healthy environment for children, teens and adults,” Rich Parent told the board on May 10.
Parent, a former professional hockey player with Tampa Bay Lightning, presented the project with Misty Montgomery, who submitted the proposal.
Parent said the facility would also include a gym, snack bar, and pro shop. He said it would be the first of its kind for the Northwest Florida area.
“The closest kind of training facility would be in Nashville or Tampa Bay,” Parent said.
Parent asked the board to consider several variances on the project including a smaller buffer between properties and buildings, as well as reduced number of required parking spots.
Parent said their proposal includes an ice surface that is 60 by 120 feet. The facility is 13,500 square feet and is located at 3070 Westfield Road.
One person who attended the meeting expressed concerns with the hours of operation and if the activity would be going on late at night. The adjacent properties are homes and he said the neighborhood is full of families with children.
Parent told the board he anticipates the last sessions would commence no later than 9:30 p.m. He said it could vary from night to night and that they were also looking at adding adult hockey.
The board unanimously approved the requested variances.
Parent said if all goes according to plan, they anticipate an opening in October or November of this year.
