A Pensacola man has been charged with animal cruelty after an arrest report indicates he shot a dog with his rifle.

According to the arrest report, deputies arrived in the area of Pine Ridge Lane in reference to an animal incident on August 12.

There, the report states, deputies found a pit bull mix with blood from its mouth to its right shoulder.

Deputies found a small wound on the dog’s right foreleg that appeared to be from a gunshot, according to the report.

The report states the dog "appeared to be in pain and was unable to stand or walk.”

Residents in the area told deputies that the dog frequently breaks out of the owner’s fence and isn’t known to be aggressive.

Deputies eventually made contact with 26-year-old Johnathan Paul Humphries, however, much of the arrest report after his mention is redacted.

The report says Humphries was charged with “animal cruelty by firing his .22 caliber long rifle and subsequently striking a dog in the right foreleg, causing it pain and suffering.”

The owner of the dog was contacted and was taken to an emergency vet for treatment.
