A 50-year-old man is accused of assaulting his acquaintance with a shovel. Authorities say it happened Thursday around 6:30 a.m. behind the Waterfront Mission off Herman Street.

Deputies responded to the railroad tracks for a call of a possible overdose. Once there, they found a victim laying on the tracks bleeding from the head.

Investigators determined the victim had been hit multiple times with a shovel, according to Escambia County Sheriff's Office (ECSO) spokesperson Maj. Andrew Hobbs. The victim was taken to a local hospital.

The suspect, Herbie Helton, was taken into custody and charged with aggravated battery, according to Escambia County Jail records.
