National Seashore begins shutdown procedures
GULF BREEZE, Fla. —
Gulf Islands National Seashore officials began shutdown procedures Friday at the park’s island units.
The steps are being taken ahead of tropical weather expected to arrive in Northwest Florida this weekend.
According to a news release, the Fort Pickens, Santa Rosa, and Perdido Key Areas could close to the public as early as Saturday afternoon.
Officials say campers at Fort Pickens Campground should begin making plans to evacuate in case the order is given.
Park officials will continue to monitor the tropical disturbance and make preparations for a full strength tropical storm.
Additional closures are possible as the disturbance’s track and potential strength becomes more evident.
