Nephew held on $200,000 bond for death of Daphne Police Department employee

A longtime City of Daphne employee was reportedly shot to death by her nephew Friday morning.

The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office said they received a report of a possible shooting in the 9000 block of County Road 64 at 8:10 a.m.

Deputies found the victim, 59-year-old Maria Anita Nicholson, dead from an apparent gunshot wound in her home.

Investigators said Maria left her home before 8 a.m. to go to work. Maria received a call from a family member saying her nephew, 26-year-old Donald Nicholson, was shooting at her home.

The sheriff's office said Maria "entered the residence where she was intentionally shot by Donald Nicholson at least one time." A neighbor called authorities after hearing the gunshot.

Investigators said they believe Donald was living at the home along with Maria.

The sheriff's office said the victim was a longtime City of Daphne employee and has worked at the Daphne Police Department for more than a decade. She was currently assigned as an administrative assistant in support services.

Donald is currently incarcerated at the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office Correction's Center where he's being held on a $200,000 bond.
