Santa Rosa County proposes adding new property tax bill to fund sheriff's office
SANTA ROSA COUNTY, FLA. (WEAR-TV) —
Santa Rosa County is discussing the idea of having a new line item on property tax bills.
The tax bill would be specifically for funding the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office.
County leaders say funding the Sheriff's office this way would be more transparent for tax-payers, but it's just a proposal for now.
The Sheriff's Office is currently funded from the county commissioner's general fund.
Commissioner Bob Cole said his budget is growing and so is Santa Rosa County.
He said he feels having the funding listed clearly on the tax bill would give people a better understanding how public safety money is spent.
Bob Cole, Santa Rosa County Commissioner says "What the sheriff would do, he'd have his own line on your trim notice, on your tax bill. Just like the school board does and the county commission does, but the sheriff's budget has gotten to be where it's around 80 percent of what you pay the county. I feel like it's better to break that out since it is such a large amount so citizens can understand".
Commissioner Cole said this proposal will be discussed further next month.
