Scammer claimed she was a military wife to get money
PENSACOLA, Fla. (WEAR) —
Pensacola police are looking for victims of a 34-year-old woman accused of posing as a military wife in order to scam people out of money.
Police say Javon Harris would approach people, ask if they were former military and if they replied "yes", she'd tell them her husband was active military in Virginia, and she had fallen on hard times. Investigators say Harris would ask the victims for money in exchange for gift cards, or accept checks from her for cash.
She claimed she needed the money for medications and vehicle repairs. The checks she made out were from an account belonging to a “Betty Smith”.
Harris is charged with larceny, exploitation of the elderly, forgery and passing a forged instrument.
Police say she has also conducted the scams within the jurisdictions of Gulf Breeze and Escambia County. Call Pensacola Police at 850-435-1965 if you believe you were a victim of these scams.
