A deputy-involved shooting in Jay is under investigation.

Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson said deputies responded to a call at a home on Highway 4 about domestic violence with a weapon after 6 a.m. Saturday.

Sheriff Johnson said 26-year-old Glenn D. Phillips was armed with a crossbow.

Santa Rosa County Sheriff's deputies, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney’s Office were all on scene.

William Wilson live across the road from where the shooting happened.

"It's always something going," Wilson said.

Sheriff Johnson said while officers were en route, Phillips pointed a crossbow at his dad.

"When he pointed the crossbow at his father that is a felony," Johnson stated.

"It's something that you don't want to live with and its aggravating," added Wilson.

Johnson said Phillips barricaded himself inside the home when deputies arrived. He says deputies negotiated with him for nearly 2 hours.

"The subject that was shot has a lengthy record with us," Johnson added. "The officers that responded have dealt with him in the past said that he acted very strangely and he acted very strangely today."

The sheriff said when deputies entered the home Phillips was armed and aimed his crossbow at deputies, forcing them to fire.

"As you can see in this case you bring a crossbow to a gun fight you're going to lose every time," said Johnson.

Sheriff Johnson said only one of the officers fired their weapon with a bullet striking the suspect in his shoulder.

"We believe right now with all of the facts that we know it is perfectly justifiable, you point a crossbow at somebody, something that can go through a bulletproof vest, if you're dumb enough to point it at an officer you're dumb enough to get shot," Johnson explained.

Johnson said no deputies were injured and the man who was shot is being treated at a hospital.

The name of the officer involved has not been released to us.

Johnson told WEAR Channel 3 that FDLE is interviewing the officer and witnesses.

The State Attorney’s Office will then decide if the shooting was appropriate.
