A man is hospitalized after being shot by police following a pursuit Thursday afternoon in Milton.

According to Milton Police Chief Tony Tindell, it all started with a man stealing a truck from a woman near Munson Highway and Stewart Street.

Chief Tindell told Channel 3 the suspect was driving a stolen car shortly before he stole the truck near Munson.

Once the suspect stole the car he later dumped it near Carpenters Park stealing a truck from a woman, says the police chief.

The victim flagged down an officer and a chase began.

The Chief said the suspect lost control and ran off the road and crashed through a fence , near a holding pond just north of the entrance to Whiting Field on Highway 87 north.

As the officer went to check on the man, Chief Tindell said he charged the officer with a 6 to 8 inch knife.

The officer shot the man in the chest, the chief confirmed.

The suspect was transported by ground ambulance to a hospital where he is in surgery, but is expected to survive.

The officer was not injured, but taken to a hospital to be checked out.

The case is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
