ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Investigators are looking for a shooter after a man is killed this weekend at the Moorings Apartments in Escambia County.
WEAR News spoke with the victim's football coach who was heartbroken Monday afternoon. He says 32-year-old Jacoby "Shad" Young was someone who was strong-willed and passionate about football and his family.
Escambia County deputies are still looking for who killed Young.
Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons says Young apparently knew his killer.
"A female returned to her apartment, the individual she shares her apartment with was in a disagreement with two black males. That led them to shoot and kill him. Then they fled. We’re still putting the pieces together. They don’t appear to be random, in fact most of the ones we have are not random. There’s a basis for them, spontaneous targets that escalated to gunfire, or targeted events," Sheriff Simmons said.
Football Coach Fred Barnett says Young was a good man.
Barnett says he died protecting his girlfriend Saturday night at the Moorings Apartments on Old Spanish Trail Road.
Barnett coached and mentored Young for eight years.
Young was part of Barnett’s pro-minor league football team called the Greater Pensacola Jets.
"Anytime we would do like an event or some type of community service event, like a park clean up or a fundraiser, he was always there, he was always there," Barnett said. "When we had camp for the kids, you know he was always there, helping out."
Barnett says Young was like family.
"He's like that that little boy that follows his big brother around, you know when they're younger, always wanna be like him always want to do the things he did, and that's how I felt with him and that's apparently how he felt with me," Barnett said.
As of now, the sheriff's office hasn't released any information about a suspect in this case.
Meanwhile, Young's family will be holding a vigil this Wednesday to celebrate his life.
