Newly released body camera footage shows the moments a former Oklahoma State Senator was found in a motel room with an underage male.

Ralph Shortey pleaded guilty last week to a federal charge of child sex trafficking. Video released Dec. 4 shows the former two-term Republican being questioned by police March 9 inside a Super 8 motel along I-35 in Moore.

  • Officer: "He's 17"
  • Shortey: "Okay"
  • Officer: "What do you, mean okay?"
  • Shortey: "I didn't know that."

Shortey can be seen in the video wearing a shirt referencing the Bible scripture Ephesians 5:22, which refers to wives submitting to their husbands.

"Can you show me that he is only 17?" Shortey says in the video.

Court records show on March 9 Moore police made contact with Shortey at the Super 8 Hotel on N. I-35 Service Road. Shortey was inside the hotel room alone with a 17-year-old male.

Officers smelled a strong odor of marijuana in the room and found a container with a small amount of the drug inside. Police also found an open box of condoms and a bottle of lotion in Shortey's backpack inside the room.

Court documents show officers learned of a conversation between Shortey and the juvenile on the messaging app "Kik". Police determined Shortey used the alias "Jamie Tilley" and the username "Brinokc4u" during the conversation.

Police say the juvenile told Shortey he needed money for spring break.

Shortey replied he didn't have any things he needed help with at the moment, then asked "would you be interested in 'sexual' stuff?" The juvenile responded yes and the two continued discussing how and where they'd meet. After he was charged, Shortey resigned from his seat in the Oklahoma Senate.

Shortey entered a guilty plea in exchange for federal prosecutors dropping three child pornography counts against him. During the plea, Shortey admitted to knowing the boy was 17.

Shortey faces up to life in prison and a $250,000 fine for child sex trafficking.
