Lady Cats surging

After a promising start, the Washington High girls basketball team hit a rough patch mid-season. Four straight losses, three at a tournament in Birmingham, turned into a pivotal moment.

"We played some really good teams and we found out that we're not where we want to be yet," said Head Coach Jade Brown.

The Lady Cats have won 11 straight since. Two underclassmen are leading the charge in Jaila Roberts and Janelle Jones, but it's the supporting cast that's stepped it up in the winning streak. Still, it's Roberts and Jones who shine brightest, both averaging a little over 14 points.

Roberts, a junior point guard and Jones, a sophomore forward, bring a special chemistry as well.

"Me and Jaila have played together since we were in 3rd or 4th grade, so she's always been on my right hand, I've been her left hand," said Jones.

This is a proud program with four state championship, but they haven't won a playoff game in seven years. The significance of trying to breakthrough means a lot to this group. Washington will host Fort Walton Beach in the Regional quarterfinals on Thursday.
