Rocky Bayou Softball earning all kinds of attention
Before the interview started Rocky Bayou Softball Coach Lynn Holcomb issued a warning to her players.
"None of you clowns behind me", said Holcomb. She had good reason to be worried.
The team's photobomb of her interview after their region semifinal win was an instant classic. But, go to any Rocky Bayou game or practice and you'll realize that wasn't just a let loose after a playoff victory moment. It's how they roll.
"It's a huge part of what we've become, it's who they are as people. They are happy positive kind of kids," said Holcomb .
While the goofy antics make this group thrive, they know how to get down to business when they need to. It's something visiting St. Johns found out in the region final.
"They said we're too silly, we can't win. Little did they know that's how we get hyped up, pumped up, and ready to play," said Senior Catcher Kaylee Orr.
Of course the main reason they are the state's top ranked 3A team is a load of talent. The list starts with an 8th grader. Fourteen-year-old phenom Samantha Roe, who is already committed to the University of Florida is hitting a mind blowing .620. She also locks it down defensively at shortstop. Junior Alicyn Grete is also a stud at the plate, hitting a gaudy .569, but the West Point commit is most valuable in the circle. She's pitched every inning this season and has a stellar 1.07 ERA.
Coach Holcomb call her an extremely hard worker that just keeps getting better.
Not only is this new territory for the softball program, they are the first team of any kind at Rocky Bayou to reach a State Final Four. As you can imagine, they're pretty excited about it around the school.
As for that photobomb warning at the start of the interview, the girls still managed to get Coach Holcomb with another entertaining skit.
Rocky Bayou is scheduled to play Cornerstone Charter Academy in the 3A State Semifinals on Monday in Vero Beach.
