Smith reaches rare air for Choctaw
Diante Smith had two older brothers that played basketball, and that's all the motivation he needed. "Watching my older brothers play middle school and high school was everything to me", said Smith. It didn't take long for young Diante to start making an impression. Choctaw High School Head Coach Andy Thigpen first noticed him at Meigs Middle School. "We used to call him the baby giraffe when he was there because he was just so long and so humble.", said Thigpen. With a crazy combination of skills at six foot seven, Smith became a stud from day one at Choctaw. More well-rounded than ever as a senior, he leads the team in points, rebounds, assists, and blocks. In an area not known for producing Division-I college hoop players, he resisted the impulse to move. Smith earned plenty of offers, originally committing to Alabama, ultimately signing with TCU.
