2018 hurricane season outlook

Hurricane season starts June 1st and runs through November 30th. That's when conditions are most favorable for development.

Since 1953, tropical storms and hurricanes have been named.

The World Meteorological Organization chooses the names and rotates them every six years.

Names are retired when a hurricane causes significant deaths or damage.

In 2018, NOAA is predicting we'll see 10 to 16 named storms, with five to nine becoming hurricanes, and one to four becoming major hurricanes, category 3 or higher.

The Colorado State University outlook is very similar, with 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.
